Evelyn Fogwe Chibaka PhD

Evelyn Fogwe Chibaka was born in Mbatu-Mezam, Cameroon. She did her PhD in generative Syntax at the University of Hamburg, Germany under the sponsorship of DAAD (2001). Evelyn is currently a Full-time Professor in the Department of Linguistics, University of Buea, Cameroon. In her area of research interest, she has published widely in national and international journals, book chapters and books in the domains of Syntax, Applied Linguistics - Documentary Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Gender & Culture, and currently in Digital Humanities her new-found research interest specialty. As a primary investigator in many endangered language documentation projects (progressively and simultaneously sponsored by ‘Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Stiftung Foundation’, ‘Volkswagen Stiftung Foundation (DoBeS Program)’, ‘International Centre for Research and Documentation on African Tradition and Languages (CERDOTOLA)’, University of Buea research grant and The German Embassy, Yaounde, Cameroon) specifically in the NW & Littoral Region of Cameroon, she has been extensively exposed to some language, traditional artifacts, and cultural corpora/data collection, management and archiving digital tools and techniques. She current won the "Humboldt Alumni Award 2020 for Innovative & Networking Initiatives" promoting networking between female academics, which extends to the realization of the "Cameroon Professional Research Oriented Women Networking" (CaPROWN) Association's projects as the Founder and President. She is happily married to Dr. Boniface Fogwe (a Medical Practitioner ) and they are blessed with a good number of children.

  • Certified IELTS Examiner – Engaged by CM001 British Council Cameroon center as an “International English Language Testing System (IELTS)” Examiner from June  2014 to date (Renewable).

  • Associate Researcher - For ‘International Centre for Research and Documentation on African Tradition and Languages (CERDOTOLA)’ by Decision No. 14/63/CERDOTOLA/CAB/NS of 14 May 2014.

  • Associate Professor     - At the University of Buea (Full-time Lectureship in Linguistics – Generative syntax, Sociolinguistics, & Applied linguistics) from 20th December 2013.

  • University of Bamenda (Part-time Lectureship in Linguistics – Documentary Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, & Applied linguistics) from 17th October 2016.

  • Lecturer   - In the University of Leipzig, (Part-time lectureship in ‘European Summer  University (ESU), on ‘Digital Humanities’) in July 2019.

  • In the University of Buea (Full-time Lectureship in Linguistics – Generative syntax,   Sociolinguistics, & Applied linguistics) from 20th November 2006 to 19th Dec.2013.

                                                CURRENT ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENTS

  • Teaching introductory courses (in Generative Syntax & Applied Linguistics) at the undergraduate levels;

  • Teaching mostly the MA & PhD levels in Syntax, Applied Linguistics (in all the different inter-related disciplines), Socio-, Psycho- and Documentary Linguistics at different Semesters;

  • Actively supervising theses from both undergraduate (BA) and post-graduate (MA & PhD) candidates in the Universities of Bamenda, Buea, Yaounde 1 and Hamburg;

  • Functioning as IELTS Examination consultant with British Council, Yaounde Center;

  • The realization of research field works in Language Documentation research projects;

  • Organizing or jointly organizing national and international training workshops, and colloquium/conferences;

  • Providing academic talks, lectures and Keynote speeches in national and international Summer schools/Universities and colloquium/conferences;

  • Active now in editing and developing books and articles from already collected data from previous research field trips;

  • Capacity building by inviting & monitoring PhD students and post-doctorate (female) candidates to German Universities for research stay (training workshops, international academic facilities & infrastructural exposures/experiences, academic collaborations, integration & exchanges with the Western scientific world).
